CMOs and Marketing Leaders must allocate their marketing budgets to focus on growth amid financial and geopolitical uncertainty. They must set a marketing strategy that reprioritizes channels, programs and resources to remain competitive and efficient. Explore five key findings from Gartner’s annual CMO Spend Survey that captures the state of marketing budgets in 2023.

  1. Three anchors weigh on enterprise growth in 2023 - high interest rates, a difficult talent market, and lagging digital transformation
  2. Marketing budgets compose 9.1% of total company revenue in 2023, remaining relatively flat but still dipping slightly from the 9.5% reported in 2022
  3. 71% of CMOs believe they lack sufficient budget to fully execute their strategy in 2023 
  4. Despite  budget pressures, 63% of CMOs plan to grow tech investments and only 23% plan to cut them
  5. Paid media leads in budget allocation across major marketing resources (25.6% of overall 2023 budget)
